  1. Talk to people in the jobs that you can promote to.   Find out what they did to succeed and what they would do differently.  Discuss the mistakes they made, how they see the job evolving, and what steps you should take to promote.
  2. Watch the people in the jobs that you can promote to.  Analyze what they do and how executive management reacts to their success and failures.  Learn from their successes and failures.
